Reflection for Monday of the Fourth Week of Lent

Today's Mass Readings

The healing of the royal official’s son is a powerful testimony of intercessory prayer (that is, praying for others). The official begs Jesus to heal on behalf of another person, his son. The love of his ill son and his faith in Jesus’ power to save are powerfully united in his request: “Sir, come down before my child dies.”

Commonly, people will promise their prayers for another individual or a special intention, but the words “I’ll pray for you” become merely a nicety and are not acted upon. Take intercessory prayer seriously. Be fervent in prayer, as Jesus encouraged us elsewhere to “pray always without becoming weary” (Lk 18:1).

The boy is healed through his father’s intercession with Jesus. But, let’s not forget that the reason that Jesus is able to cure the royal official’s son in the first place was largely due to the hearts of the people, noted in the opening verses of the Gospel: “When he [Jesus] came into Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him…” Jesus is most eager to dwell in the hearts of all those who welcome him. Welcome our Lord today into your home, welcome prayer for others, and welcome the Holy Spirit’s action to guide and be with you throughout this day.

Reflection: In your life, who is depending upon your frequently and persistent intercession? Do you take the time to pray for those who ask for your prayers?
