Reflection for Saturday of the Fifth Week of Lent

Today's Mass Readings

“What do you think? That he will not come to the feast?”

In moments of trial we are tempted to not show up. We are tempted to hide behind ignorance, behind fear, behind a sense of “I just want to be nice.” But we are called to be courageous witnesses of God’s plan for all of humanity: that all shall be one with him through Jesus Christ, who came to redeem the world.

Jesus was well aware of the Pharisees and the chief priests’ desire to trap and kill him. He knew they were afraid, dangerous, and violent. He knew that if he went to the feast he would die. The Pharisees, in turn, knew the character of Jesus, that his piety (if they believed it honest or not) would urge him to return to the Temple for Passover. Jesus was unafraid to accept his mission.

That strength can be our strength. We are in a time of great trial, we are called to go to the feast of Passover: to witness to God’s saving action in the world. Will we go? Will we face our persecutors and be bold in our proclamation?

It is no easy task to go to the feast but we are called to go. Join with us in witnessing to God’s revelation in Jesus Christ. Join us in being light in a world of darkness.

Reflection: What moments have you been called to witness to your faith and failed — was it fear, worry, or uncertainty? Ask for the grace to have courage in moments of trial and for the grace of bold proclamation.
