Reflection for Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Lent

Today's Mass Readings

“I AM”

Moses, looking upon a miraculous event, hears God speak to him and offers Moses his name, “I AM.” This name is sacred. It is the name we are not to profane by using lightly or in vulgar speech: “You shall not take the name of the Lord our God in vain.”

“I AM” is also a name of power. This is the God who confronted Pharaoh and the people of Egypt through mighty deeds and marvelous signs. This name led Israel through the desert by pillars of cloud and fire. It is a name that creates and recreates. It took an insignificant people and refashioned them into something new, something holy, something healed.

Christ utters these same words; Christ is the great “I AM.” Christ is a name of power. Christ confronts the depravity of our enslavement through mighty deeds and marvelous signs. Christ leads us through the desert by a pillar of his cross. His name creates and recreates. He takes an insignificant people and refashions us into something new, something holy, something healed.

We bow to you, “I AM!” We worship you, O Christ! We adore you, “I AM!” We serve you, O Christ! Save your people, Lord, visit her in our night and bring the dawn of your Resurrection.

Reflection: What place does the name of Christ hold in your heart? Is it the name of the great “I AM”? Say the name of Christ with love, with reverence, with adoration and be saved.
