Saturday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

“Then, taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to distribute…” What is happening in our Gospel today is what we partake in every Sunday—the Eucharist. Every Sunday, crowds gather at church to sit, hear the Word of God, and be fed by God. The food we receive is the Word and the Holy Eucharist—fuel for our souls. We are participating in a wonder! We are blessed when we attend Mass.

I think that for some, Mass can lose that awe and wonder. Yes, Mass can seem routine from time to time. If you are one of those who are dragging a little with that wonder, do something different when you attend Mass. Maybe it’s following along the Mass with a Magnificat or Give Us This Day booklet. Maybe it’s reading the Mass readings before you attend so you know what will be proclaimed. Maybe it’s fasting before Mass…remember when everyone did that? If you are dragging now, don’t let it stay that way. The longer you drag, the harder it will be to gain that wonder again.

The Eucharist is a window to Christ’s eternal banquet offered for us. Let us eagerly gather at that Sunday Eucharist, our Bread of Life.
