Saturday of the First Week of Lent
And this week ends as it began, with a confirmation of the covenant between God and us.
The covenant goes beyond keeping the commandments, although those are good places to start.
Harming our enemies is not be done, according to the commandments. Not enough, however. We need to go further and actually pray for them.
This takes a good amount of humility. God—not me—is the judge of others. God—not me—knows what is in the heart of others.
Praying for those who have harmed us is hard. It means letting go of anger and frustration. It is a positive virtue.
May the Sign of Jonah accompany each of us on our Lenten journey.
