Saturday of the Fourth Week of Lent
“So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. Some of them even wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.” In today’s Gospel, we see the confusion that arises among the people about Jesus. Some hear his words and see his signs and see him as a great prophet. Others wonder if this is the long-awaited Christ. And others, in their hardness of hearts, question the graces they are witnessing because they think they know where he is from; although if they knew where he was truly from they would not persecute him.
At times we can see divisions in our lives and even among the faithful. We might feel that we are in the right or are being unfairly treated or misunderstood. I think that we must first look and see if are we following Christ and understanding where he is truly from. Are we the one causing the division by our hardness of heart or are we blinded because of a preconceived notion of where we think Jesus in coming from? Maybe we are being treated unfairly and we are the ones being misunderstood. In these cases, we must have faith in our God who is our refuge. We can plead to God with the Psalmist, “Do me justice, O LORD, because I am just, and because of the innocence that is mine.” And take courage for, “O Lord, my God, in you I take refuge.”
