Today's Mass Readings

In today’s Gospel from Matthew, we encounter a familiar and profound statement from Jesus: “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them.” Jesus often used children to make important points, and this message is as relevant to us now as it was then. But why did Jesus choose children as his example?

Jesus used children in his teachings because they embody true humility. Unlike adults, children ask questions with genuine curiosity and a desire to understand, free from deceit or ego. Their sincerity contrasts sharply with the often contentious nature of adult interactions, where conversations can become battles of right versus wrong.

It’s a poignant reality that as we grow older, we may lose that childlike humility and innocence. Our discussions can shift from seeking truth to merely proving ourselves right. So, how can we rediscover the humility we once had as children?

In our hyper-critical and overly competitive world, where we are quick to seek the approval of others and often slow to extend our own approval of their successes, can we humble ourselves before God and pray from a childlike space inside us that approaches God humbly, earnestly seeking answers? Can we suspend our jealous tendencies and our need to claim center stage and trust that we can become just as holy as we should?
