Today's Mass Readings

“Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” Luke 2:49

When Mary and Joseph could not find Jesus in the caravan, they were understandably worried. Mary said to the child Jesus, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” But Jesus responded, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” In this moment, Jesus teaches us that the will of God comes before all things, even family ties. This does not diminish the goodness of family. Instead, it shows that family is most fully itself when it is rightly ordered toward God. When God is at the center of family life and when each member focuses on God’s will for one another, familial bonds are strengthened and brought to their fulfillment.
