Saturday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time
God presented St. Paul and all of the Apostles as the last of all, so that no one would be inflated with pride.
The Apostles were ordinary persons who became good stewards over time.
The mother of James and John requested that her sons sit at Jesus’ right and left when he came into his kingdom. Jesus asked her sons, “Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” And they replied, “We are able.” They did actually drink from the cup of Jesus, although not in ways they may have imagined. James was martyred, the first Apostle to die. John died of old age after being persecuted and exiled, the last Apostle to die.
The cup from which we drink is filled with what God asks of us. The Truth of Christ within guides us through trials. The manifestations of our heart lead to trustworthiness and, God willing, to Heaven.
