Second Sunday of Lent
Lent has begun, and though the ashes may have faded from our foreheads, we are still a people yearning for God’s mercy. But there is something different about this Sunday and even about this week. We hear words from God the Father. Usually in the Gospels, we hear God’s silence; he seems to be reluctant to say anything. Still today on the mountain, the sacred height, where Jesus is transfigured in the presence of Peter, James, and John, Jesus appears in dazzling white along with Moses and Elijah. These latter two men are meant to symbolize what Jesus has come to fulfill; he is the new Moses (the new Lawgiver) and completes the task of the Prophets (Elijah, who must come again). But there is more to it than this. The voice of the Father proclaims, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Then comes the message for the disciples and for us: “Listen to him.” This will be our special Lenten task today and this week—we are to listen to what the Lord is saying to us, and we are especially going to pay attention to how he speaks.
