Sixth Sunday of Easter
Today Christ tells us, “I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.” Jesus must go back to the Father so that the apostles can start their mission in the Church. As Jesus again says “If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I.” If Christ stayed on earth, then the advocate, the Holy Spirit, wouldn’t come! The reading gets us ready for two big feasts coming, the Ascension of the Lord and Pentecost. Without the Ascension there is no Pentecost, and without Pentecost there is no Church to spread the gospel. So, let us rejoice and be glad, for the Lord has ascended on high, and he is back with the Father to help us spread the Gospel to those we meet through the Holy Spirit.
