Solemnity of Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
“You will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation.” Isaiah 12.2
What is it about a human heart that captures attention? Isn’t it just the organ that pumps blood throughout the body? In Jesus’ time and in the thought of the Bible, the heart was the center of one’s self. The heart is the inner compass that guides us and holds the deepest yearnings and beliefs. And yet, the heart is what goes astray from God when we sin. A Christian is responsible to keep his heart pure. This includes going to Confession to a priest in Reconciliation, faithfully attending Mass and religious obligations, making a daily Examination of Conscience, and participating in Church support group for accompanying one another. Beyond that there is so much more we can do for our hearts.
Jesus’ heart is where humanity and divinity are most perfectly wed. His heart endured human suffering. His heart also held divine intimacy. When we recognize the Sacred Heart of Jesus as the heart that loves us the most, all devotion is complete. We turn to him who literally sets his heart on fire for us. As Jesus enkindled the hearts of the two disciples on the way to Emmaus, let us open our hearts to be widened and enflamed by the Sacred Heart. Amen.
