Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord
The ministry of Jesus began with humility. God became one like us, and he learned under the tutelage of his parents. His life’s work began at 30 years of age and spanned three years. His target market was the Jewish people, who already believed that there is only one God.
Jesus looked for and found other persons who were inspired to help with his ministry. The mission was to draw all persons to God and to salvation through repentance and forgiveness of sins. This began with the law (the Ten Commandments), but it was simplified to love of God and love of neighbor. Through miracles, through preaching, and through his own passion and death, Jesus defined love for his apostles and followers as willing the good of another. Authentic love is intentional and is grounded on convictions.
The resurrection of Jesus strengthened the convictions of the apostles for the mission. The days following the resurrection were filled with carrying out the succession plan to continue Jesus’ mission. How well did the apostles learn the mission? How well were they living the mission? How committed were they to the mission? In addition to loving God, did they also have the virtues of faith and hope that would be needed for the work ahead of them?
Jesus commissioned the apostles. He broadened the mission to include both Jews and Gentiles. He also promised to send the Holy Spirit to be with them after his Ascension. The apostles knew little of this Holy Spirit, but they trusted in the resurrected Lord.
