Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Our Blessed Mother Mary is the premier example for all Christians in terms of following in her Son’s footsteps. Present alongside him in his public ministry, without drawing attention to herself, she shared in his work through their intimate bond. She knew her Son better than anyone else and, although she was not scourged or put to death by the authorities, she was at his side through his Passion, Death, and Resurrection, undergoing her own suffering in communion with him. Thus, it is fitting that the Blessed Mother should herself rise from sleep to be fully reunited with her Son, being assumed body and soul into Heaven. Her soul proclaimed the greatness of the Lord through her humble submission to his will and loving care for Jesus. He was pleased to give his life so that we might live, and she is the first of us to share in the eternal Resurrection he has in store for us.
