Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God

Today's Mass Readings

A very Happy New Year to all. It is very fitting that we celebrate this solemnity of Mary, Mother of God! Yesterday, we read from the prophecy of Simeon: “And you yourself a sword will pierce—so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” I am reminded of what a priest friend shared with us at Mass one time during a Marian feast day, and it has special meaning on this solemnity. He said, “The bond of Mary and Jesus is so special that it cannot be broken! They share the same genetic code!” This is not to say that Mary is God, but she is like God, sinless, like Adam and Eve were in the garden before the temptation of the serpent. Mary knows her calling. She knows through Simeon that she will suffer greatly at our Lord’s passion. She knows what her identity is, that she is the Mother of God! Let us always invoke our Lady because she is our mother also, and we become like her when we receive Holy Communion, full of grace.
