Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

Today's Mass Readings

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Matthew 11:28-30

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus offers us rest by paradoxically inviting us to take on a yoke. A yoke is a heavy wooden beam that is usually placed across oxen or other animals so that they can pull heavy farming equipment. So how exactly does placing a heavy beam across us give us any relief? The good news is that yokes are usually designed to be shared across a pair of animals. When we accept Christ’s yoke, we don’t carry our burdens alone. Jesus is right there beside us, helping us bear the weight of our struggles.
