The Ascension of the Lord

Today's Mass Readings

Last month my family remembered the anniversary of my mother’s passing. I can still remember that day, saying goodbye to Mom. My Dad and all my siblings were with her as she took her final breath. Mom was the boss that all of us kids took direction from. And after her death, we felt pretty lost. We thought that there was no other person who could fill in her shoes. What were we gonna do?

I always think back to that event when we celebrate our Lord’s Ascension. Jesus came to our world, became human, took on our sins, died for those sins, was resurrected, returned to his disciples, and now leaves again. I’m sure the disciples were wondering what they were going to do next, I’m sure they were feeling lost.

My siblings and I came to realize that Mom was still with us; she never left. She gave a part of herself to us, that shaped us to become the persons we are today. If we live the way and act the way Mom taught us, she lives on in us. And the same is the case for disciples. Jesus gave them everything that was His, and if they planted that firmly in their hearts and souls, he would be with them forever.

We are the heirs of those first disciples, as their children of faith we have the living Christ in us! He lives! Yesterday, today, and tomorrow!
