The Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
I think it is very fitting that the last day of the year is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Family. We read in our Gospel today the Canticle of Simeon and his prophecy to our Lady, “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him, and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be contradicted —and you yourself a sword will pierce— so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” Simeon has seen the Lord, and now he can die in peace, but he says to our Lady that Jesus is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel. Both his father and mother were amazed!
We always talk about Mary’s heart, but let’s take a closer look at the sweet heart of St. Joseph. What do you think St. Joseph was pondering in his heart when he heard this? I believe he was pondering, “My Lord and my God!” because he knew that this child, the savior of ALL the world, was conceived by the Holy Spirit. How blessed indeed you are, dear St. Joseph, the quiet one, guardian of virgins, a silent protector, the white knight of God! You were blessed that you got to hold our savior in your arms, kiss him, protect him from every force of evil! You, O Terror of Demons, come to our aid and protect us as you protected the Holy Family. AMEN!
