Thursday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time
Suitable Partner
Imagine you are the first (and only) living being. You live in a beautiful garden with various trees that are “…delightful to look at and good for food….” (Gn 2:9) You have something to do, you have a role to play, and you are close to God who created you. What more do you want?
Ah, you are alone. But you have God; you’re not alone, are you? It seems so. “The Lord God said: ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.’” (Gn 2:18) By God’s design, we are social creatures. Although it is good to have some alone time, we thrive and learn and grow best when we have others around us—especially those who love and care for us, and those whom we can love and care for.
God calls us to communion, not only with Him but also with other human beings. We can consider the various vocations as different ways to communion with others and God: single life, married life, consecrated life, ordained life.
For the Journey:
Consider your vocation in life, your calling. What “suitable partner” did God put in your life? If you’re discerning or re-discerning, seek out spiritual advice—reading, talking, journaling, praying.
