Thursday of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

“Teach me your ways, O Lord.” Ps. 25.4

Theology is one of the greatest treasures of the Church, without question. You cannot love what you do not know. Remember, God wants to be known by us in His infinite love and mercy. The art of studying theology and knowing the faith more is like building a skyscraper. The building is built over time, and when it is finished, it will allow you to climb higher than you had gone before. And still, a skyscraper will never be higher than the sky itself. We can never know God completely and be master of the divine. Knowing God is what Jacob wanted to do when he wrestled with messenger God sent. He wanted to know the name of the divine, and still, he was not permitted to know it. Theology, while essential to understanding Church teaching, is nothing in comparison to actually knowing God in love. Knowledge is meant to lead to greater love, a higher love. As we have walked this week through different theological milestones, I want to encourage you, take the time to divine. Yes, take the time to pray quietly in God’s presence. Make a Holy Hour at Church. When this is not possible, pray at home in your own private prayer space. If you don’t have one, make one. Let God’s grace flow into your life from the silence. Amen.
