Thursday of the Seventh Week of Easter

Today's Mass Readings

A couple of weeks ago, England crowned a new King. It was an event covered by lots and lots of media. Most of the media said that this ceremony was rich in history and tradition. The English are quite proud of their traditions, like this coronation event. The King’s coronation ceremony has many traditions that have been passed on throughout English history, from one generation to the next generation, and has survived to the present day.

We Christians have had something passed on from generation to generation, way longer than the English Crown, and that something is the Word. It was first gifted to those first disciples of Jesus. These disciples dropped everything, received this Word from the teacher, and followed Him. And 2,000 years later, we still have this beautiful, magnificent Word, which is bigger and brighter than anything else in this world.

Jesus speaks of giving his followers this Word on the cross in today’s gospel. He says that this Word is truth. Jesus passed it to his disciples who then in turn passed it on to others, and so on and so on. What we have is something historic! We have His Word. And we are thankful to have this Word with us today. Let us be mindful of our important role, to pass this Word on. St. Bede the Venerable, pray for us.
