Thursday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

The readings this morning tell how Paul and Jesus confronted evil forces with spiritual weapons. Jesus acknowledges that his way to Jerusalem is full of danger and threat, but he identifies the true threat not as powerful Herod but as his own people’s rejection of him and unwillingness to be gathered. He overcomes these dangers through perseverance and compassion.

Paul likewise urges his listeners to take up spiritual defenses in the face of powers, not of flesh and blood, but of evil spirits. The defensive arms we need are not made of steel and arrows as would be necessary if the enemy were flesh and blood. Rather, we are to take up spiritual arms: righteousness for a breastplate, readiness for the gospel for shoes, faith for a shield, salvation for a helmet, and the Word of God for a sword.

Also essential is prayer and supplication at every opportunity. Pray for all the holy ones and for your leaders that they may be able to speak with courage the mystery of the Gospel.
