Thursday of the Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time
Vanity of vanity, all is vanity and a chasing after wind :: the refrain uttered numerous times in the book of Ecclesiastes :: from the mouth of the teacher, Quoheleth.
Whenever we hear the opening lines of the book of Ecclesiastes, with its solemn tone – vanity of vanities – we cannot help but feel a bit uncomfortable, at these sobering words.
What can these lines say to us? I think it is this. We should seek to understand our place in God’s plan, that we are stewards of the many gifts we receive. In fact, we receive much from God’s hands, and it is our task to develop those gifts to share them with others, and to be grateful. Be clear on what is important. Understand our frailty. Keep everything in perspective. Seek the Lord above all else.
Another scripture passage from the prophet Micah may help us understand today’s scripture.
You have been told what is good, and what the Lord requires of you: Only to do the right and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God. or do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God. (The prophet Micah).
The challenge is to find the proper balance, the struggle to keep things in perspective, is something we all face.
