Thursday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

This week’s meditations are focusing on the Psalms and responsorials. Let us explore today the mystery of the Psalms. The Psalms are the heartbeat of the Bible. They are not only the prayer of ancient Israel; they are the songs of Israel and the songs of the Church. The writing of the Psalmist is the highest work of all literature. The late Fr. Patrick Cummins, OSB, a monk of Conception Abbey, described the Psalms this way. No other written work can equal the Psalms’ beauty, depth, and insight. The Psalms really do draw us into the heart of God. When we pray with the Psalms we pray with our spiritual elders of old and our family of faith in the whole Church around the World. The Psalms connect us in prayer with people throughout the world, and in every time and place. We walk a path that has been trodden before and will continue to be walked, yet it never gets old. Indeed, we are blessed!

When we pray the Psalms, we learn how God’s “goodness” fills the whole World. God is with us, walking with us through life. We find suffering and iniquity. We face trials and tribulations. We find grace that is more compelling and beautiful than any adversity we encounter. How blessed we are to know God’s grace. Let us give thanks today, for we know that “the world is full of the Lord’s goodness.” Amen.
