Today's Mass Readings

“The Lord called me from birth, from my mother’s womb he gave me my name.”

Our names matter. They tell us we are someone, that we are unique, known, and often cared for. When someone calls out your name, you turn and listen. We frequently receive our name at birth from our parents, but the scripture today says it is God who gave us our name. What does this mean? What name?

The name we share is that of Christian; we share the name of Jesus Christ. It is no common name, nor can we take it lightly. By receiving this name at birth, our birth into Christ at baptism, we share in the name as son and daughter of a Father who loves us. We share in the intimacy of the Father and Son because we are called friends. We share in the mission of Jesus because we are called a temple of the Spirit.

In this name, we become witnesses to the power of Christ to be imitators of him who have given us a share in his life. May we hear this name called.
