Tuesday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time
In the first reading, Solomon addresses God and acclaims before the altar, “you keep your covenant of mercy with your servants.” Notice the language, “you keep.” It’s not, “you kept,” it’s not “you will keep,” it’s “you keep.” God’s covenant of mercy is an action, always in motion, always working. It is a wheel always moving. So why, when struggles and trials happen in our lives, do we act like that wheel is flat and not moving, that God isn’t coming to our aid?
Brothers and sisters, this is why we pray every day. This is why we go to Mass and to Confession. They are reminders for us, they affirm the acclamation Solomon makes, “you keep your covenant of mercy with your servants.” When we don’t pray, when we don’t go to Mass, when we don’t go to Confession, we forget what God is about.
