Tuesday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time
The people of Israel understood that they were God’s chosen people, but they took God’s favor for granted and sought their own desires. Their kings accumulated wealth and power, and they led the people to worship other gods who could increase their holdings. The prophet Hosea, in today’s first reading, condemns their unfaithfulness. All of their efforts to accumulate power and wealth will be revisited upon them, for they have placed their trust in false gods who do not actually exist. They are like the wind that has no true substance and cannot be harnessed. Just as one cannot plant a stone and hope to obtain crops from it, so also one cannot hope to receive good things from a non-entity. They have planted the wind and will receive the destruction of the whirlwind.
