Tuesday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

“Brothers and sisters: God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have demonstrated for his name by having served and continuing to serve the holy ones” (Hebrews 6:10). In today’s reading from Hebrews, we see that God looks upon all we have done and are doing and remembers them as he looks upon us. He upholds his promise of salvation if we serve him and our brothers and sisters in love. But we are called not just to serve him out of a duty, for we are encouraged to have an “eagerness for the fulfillment of hope until the end, so that you may not become sluggish.”

We can oftentimes push ourselves through what we are called to do, but we should ask ourselves “do we have an eagerness and a desire for our service?” Or have we become sluggish, just making it through? We must have the desire of love for our brothers and sisters that leads to service. We know what this desire looks like because we are told to be, “imitators of those who, through faith and patience, are inheriting the promises.” We look to that great cloud of witnesses, both the canonized saints and our everyday saints, who have gone before us, for guidance, strength, and encouragement so that we may enter into eternal life and thus become a part of the great cloud of witnesses that encourages and give strength to the Church.
