Tuesday of the Sixth Week of Easter
“It is better for you that I go…”
…so that the Holy Spirit could come! This gift from the Father and the Son is indispensable in the face of a very secular and sometimes hostile culture. Because of Christ’s coming this “world is on trial. The Paraclete is the prosecuting attorney. He will prove the world wrong,”
O worldly mentality, you are wrong,
- about sin, because Christ has revealed himself as the Truth coming from God, declaring humanity’s true relationship to God. God is its creator and redeemer. O world, your sin is that you don’t want to accept the Truth.
- about “righteousness” because in going to death and in entrusting his life to the Father, from whom he came and to whom he is now returning, Christ is vindicated. He has completed the work the Father sent him to do. He stands in the right. “I have conquered the world.”
- about “condemnation” because in living and dying for God Christ has overcome the ruler of this world, has condemned, the devil, who is the power of evil. “The ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me; but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father.”
Yes, as disciples of Christ, it is better for us that Christ went and sent the Advocate to fight for us against untruth and evil. As disciples of Christ we are convinced, in faith, that we share in the victory of the Risen One. We are given to see this “world” for what it is. We are not naïve about the struggle against the Evil One. Neither will we be fearful about who’s going to win!
In each Eucharist, we are reminded of, and celebrate, the source of our victory – Christ’s Yes to the Father!
