Tuesday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time
“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:13-14
In today’s Gospel reading, we continue from where we left off yesterday in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Jesus compares his disciples to salt and light, both of which were essential in the ancient world. Salt was used to preserve meat and prevent it from spoiling. Light was necessary to be able to see and carry out one’s work. Without salt, food would go rancid; without light, no work could be done. Jesus uses these images to describe the mission of his disciples. As followers of Christ, we are called to be the salt that helps preserve society from moral decay. We are meant to be the light that guides people and leads them to Christ.
