Tuesday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

It has to be one of the greatest ironies in the Gospel. As Christians, we learn from a young age that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Yet the people around Jesus did not know or understand this fundamental truth. In the Sunday reading 10 days ago, Peter called Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. He said this in faith, yet he didn’t fully grasp Jesus’ true identity. The irony here is that the demons knew who Jesus is. They could see God before they fell. “I know who you are; the Holy One of God!” Jesus rebukes these unclean spirits, and drives them out of people. How do we embrace this truth? How do we come to live this aspect of Jesus’ identity that we know on faith?

We must remember that this fact has implications about our lives in Christ just as much as it defines Jesus. God knows us through and through. We cannot, as psalm 139 says, hide from God’s spirit or “flee” from His face. God knows us through and through by His spirit.

The Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God…
The one who is spiritual, however, can judge everything
but is not subject to judgment by anyone. 1 Cor 2:11-12

God knows us through and through. We can know God as He fully is, by knowing and loving Jesus, His one true Son. Then, the Spirit lives in us by Faith.

Reflection: What does it mean to you that Jesus is “the Holy One of God,” His only Son? How does this affect your own identity as a child of God?
