Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

When we look to achieve something, one usually asks themselves, “Am I up for this?” This is a question asked to self to see if one’s body, if one’s mind, is up for the chore. We weigh things to see if they are doable. I think that’s the first reaction we all have. Wouldn’t it be something if our first response was one of faith? Wouldn’t it be something if our first response was, “I can do this…I have faith I can…I believe in this!”

This is the kind of attitude Jesus wants to see in his followers in our gospel today. The followers are hearing some new teaching from Jesus and it sounds too hard for them to interpret, understand, and believe. They are weighing things. Stop asking, “what if…” and “can I do this…” Instead, have faith like St. Paul who proclaims, “I can do all thing in Him who gives me strength.”
