Wednesday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time
“Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.” (Mt 11:26)
Have you ever stepped back and wondered why things are the way they are? Why is the sky blue? Can I trust my senses that it is blue? Why is there a sky at all? Question chains like these may seem absurd or even disturb our peace of mind. We think of people who ask questions like this as trying to be cute. Or, if they come from the mouths of children, we often don’t know what to say. ‘That’s just the way it is. It’s how God made it. Eat your broccoli.’
In today’s Gospel, Jesus steps back and praises God for the way He has arranged things. Wow, Father, how beautiful! God reveals the truths of the gospel to those who are “childlike,” that is, those who are receptive and open to it. But to those who are skeptical, close-minded, or big-headed, they just bounce right off.
For Today: Humankind has the curiosity and the ambition to leave no rock unturned, to explore the whole world, to put a man on the moon, and to understand the darkest corners of the cosmos. It is good to question these things, to ask the big questions of life, like a child. But we must ask with a pure intention and an open heart.
