Wednesday of the First Week in Lent

Today's Mass Readings

“When the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.” (Today’s reading from Jonah)

We are now halfway through the first week of Lent, and by now we are probably starting to feel the burn of our Lenten practices. We may have even given in and had that cup of coffee or those sweets that we decided to give up. In today’s first reading, a fast is proclaimed in the city of Nineveh. Fasting can be difficult, but that’s the whole point. Fasting reminds us of how weak we are without God’s grace, especially in times of temptation and failure. This is why our Lenten fasting helps us grow closer to God. Today is a good day to renew our commitment to our Lenten practices and to ask God for the grace of perseverance.
