Wednesday of the First Week in Ordinary Time
“(Jesus) went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.”
C.S. Lewis, in his book, “The Screwtape Letters,” comments:
There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.
The devils are real! One of the forms Satan’s activity takes in human lives is an area Pope Francis stresses where humans fight against Satan every day – the temptation to negativity and despair. The best weapon against Satan is humility. He can have no understanding of this virtue because it means complete dependence upon God. That is why Mary is Satan’s principal enemy and why she is our best ally!
Recall this prayer we hear at every Eucharist, after the Our Father:
Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,
graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin
and safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope
and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
