Wednesday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

Today’s Gospel tells of Jesus’ selection of his Apostles. Apostle comes from the Greek word apostolos, which means “one who is sent.” It is an official term for someone who represents an authority figure. The authority sends out another to speak on their behalf, to make decisions and perform works in their name. These twelve men are empowered to carry out Jesus’ work of proclaiming the Kingdom of God, of healing the sick, and of driving out demons. They do this as his representatives and through his power. So, although it is often perceived as simply a list, this Gospel reading conveys that the Apostles have gained the trust of Jesus, that he knows them deeply and entrusts to them his work.
