Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Lent
Jesus’s courage in today’s Gospel is so beautiful and awe-inspiring. The story picks up where we left off yesterday, with Jesus healing the crippled man on the Sabbath; and when the Jews heard of this they began to persecute him. Now Jesus answers the Jews, “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.” This only furthered their persecution and they sought to kill him because he made himself one with God. With this threat to his life, Jesus does not back down from the truth but rather reveals it ever more deeply. He says, “Amen, amen, I say to you, the Son cannot do anything on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing; for what he does, the Son will do also.”
Jesus is from the Father and is one with the Father, and he will not cease revealing this Truth in order to save his life. Do we have the courage to stand up for this truth as well? As Jesus is one with the Father, we are one with Jesus through our Baptism. We have entered into the life and Body of Christ. The good we do is through this grace, and we cannot do anything on our own but we are given strength through our life in Christ Jesus. If you are being persecuting for this truth what will you do? Will you have the courage to stand up for the truth and reveal it more deeply?
