Wednesday of the Sixth Week of Easter
There was an old anime cartoon show I watched as a kid—or it is old to me. Two rivals were competing in a tournament and the winner would go on to be the greatest in the game. They bantered back and forth, and the first one said to the second that he couldn’t wait to beat him so he could win and rise above his past. The second said it was sad for him to see his past that way. He could gain so much by facing his past and using it to come to terms with his life. The second won the tournament and brought his journey full circle.
It is so important for us as Christians to come to terms with who we are. Every one of us takes on new life in Baptism. This new life can only come about after bringing everything into the light of who we are and whose we are. We are made new and renewed. St. Paul called on the Athenians to leave behind their days of ignorance and turn to the true God. He spoke to them eloquently and with passion, yet only a few listened. Then he went on to Corinth where he gained a larger following. He made his way to those who were willing to listen. They gave him their hearts, and the Holy Spirit inspired them to come to grace.
Brothers and sisters, pray to God to live in the Spirit of Truth today to make all our lives new and renew our commitment to Christ. This way we may always turn back to God in spite of fear and rejection. Amen.
