Wednesday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.” Matthew 5:17
In today’s Gospel reading, we continue reading through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. On Monday, we heard how Jesus went up a mountain to teach. This is a subtle allusion to Moses, who in the Old Testament went up a mountain to receive the Law. Matthew presents Jesus as a new Moses who has come to teach us the fullness of God’s Law. It is important to understand that Jesus is not erasing the Law through his teaching. Instead, he brings the Law to its fulfillment by deepening and intensifying it. Jesus moves beyond mere outward observance and calls us to an interior transformation of heart. By doing so, he invites us to deeper holiness.
