Wednesday of the Third Week of Advent

Today's Mass Readings

This week, we’ve been reflecting on the joy of God’s presence. First, we considered how God’s presence transforms curses into blessings and calls us to open our hearts in faith. Then, we marveled at His enduring presence in salvation history, working through generations to fulfill His promises in Christ. Today, our readings call us to find the joy of God’s presence even in the face of trials, as His nearness gives us the strength to endure and remain faithful.

In Revelation, John sees a vision of those who have conquered, standing before God and singing a song of praise. Their victory is not earthly triumph but enduring faithfulness through persecution and suffering. They have trusted in God’s promises and remained steadfast, finding joy not in their circumstances but in the assurance of God’s ultimate victory. Their song is a celebration of God’s justice, holiness, and faithfulness—a testimony that His presence sustains His people through every trial.

In Luke, Jesus prepares His disciples for the hardships they will face as His witnesses. He speaks not only of external persecution but of the inner challenge to remain faithful when even those closest to them may betray them. Yet, Jesus assures them: “I myself will give you a wisdom in speaking.” His words remind us that God’s presence does not remove suffering but strengthens us to endure it with courage and hope.

Today’s readings challenge us to see trials as opportunities to deepen our trust in God’s presence. The joy of Emmanuel—God with us—is not fleeting happiness but the steady assurance that we are never alone, even in the darkest moments.

As you reflect this week, consider where God is calling you to endure with faith. Pray for the grace to see His presence in your struggles and to proclaim, like the saints in Revelation, that His ways are just and true. This is the joy of endurance: knowing that in every trial, Christ walks with us, leading us to His eternal victory.
