Wednesday of the Thirty-Third Week in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel, Jesus shares a parable as he is walking to Jerusalem. He knows that he will soon be leaving this world, and the people following him believe that the Kingdom of God will soon be upon them. What they don’t know is how this will happen. Jesus tries to prepare the people with this image of servants given gold and asked to use it to make more. When the nobleman returns to collect the gold, he celebrates and blesses those who used the gold and made it grow its value.
Today, we need to see that we have also been given gold. We have been given gifts from God in our talents and responsibilities. Through our service to others, we increase these gifts and when we die, we will come before Jesus to be judged. We also see what happens to those who let fear rule their lives. He who does nothing with his gifts has everything taken from him. And finally, we see those who chose to deny the authority of the nobleman. “Now as for those enemies of mine who did not want me as their king….”
Jesus is the King of Kings. When he comes again, he wants us to be prepared. He gives us this message to take up our gifts and make use of them. The Church asks us to be good stewards and to help build the Kingdom of God here and now, with our time, talent, and treasure. By serving in the community, helping the needy, performing works of mercy, and bringing others to Christ, we use the gifts we have been given and bring the Kingdom of God to the world.
How have you used your gifts of time, talent and treasure to bring growth to the Kingdom of God?
