Wednesday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time
Responding to His Call
“You too go into my vineyard.”
The landowner goes out repeatedly throughout the day to hire workers for his vineyard. At dawn, at midday, and even in the final hour, he is seeking those who are still standing idle. I get the sense that his concern is twofold: that the work be done, but also that no one is left unemployed. In other words, God calls all of us to His Vineyard, because the Harvest is abundant.
The single day of the parable can symbolize both the whole span of time and also a particular life. God never stops calling us to Himself. Whether we hear His voice in youth, in middle age, or late in life, His invitation remains the same: “You too go into my vineyard.”
Sometimes we may think we have missed our opportunity—to grow in holiness, to deepen our faith, or to begin again. As long as the day lasts, the Lord extends His invitation with patience and generosity.
I like this parable because it is a story of hope. It reminds me that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace, and no hour of this life is too late to respond to His call. The important question is not when we enter the Vineyard, but whether we are willing to enter when the Master comes looking for us.
