Wednesday of the Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time
Some might imagine Jesus gathering a squad of soldiers about to go out on patrol. But the image of a group equipped with weapons, protective body armor, and ready for anything doesn’t fit this Gospel scene.
We need to remember that the Gospel accounts were collected some 80-90 years after the Resurrection. It was the communal memory of the early Christian community. The Gospels tell us how those early Christians practiced and believed the teachings of Jesus. They would understand that the apostles were sent out on mission trusting only in the power of the Risen Spirit rather than in human supplies. Yes, the threats of attacks were real but could not prevail against the strength and wisdom of the Spirit of Jesus residing in those authorized to teach.
After more than 2000 years, the Gospel continues to speak of the power of truth and the power of justice, hope, and compassion. The apostles and the early Church trusted that Jesus would walk with them in a broken, confused and restless world. We also must trust and do the same as we step out into a broken and restless world of our own.
