Wednesday of the Twenty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time
The passage from 1 Corinthians 12:31 – 13:13 has been read and heard so many times that it is easy for me to hear it again and believe that I comprehend it completely.
However, that is like believing I am ready to move from milk to solid food by reaching for ice cream.
The word, love, has been used so much in our time that it has lost its meaning. It mostly brings to mind very strong and warm feelings, which certainly can be a part of the experience.
Love, for St. Paul, is the foundation upon which everything depends. It includes feelings, to be sure, but it is rooted in convictions for which a person is willing to stake his or her life. It does not allow any and all actions and behaviors of others; rather it encourages virtues and values and prays that God’s will be done. Love requires maturity, humility, and a child-like trust. These are not easy.
Honestly, I am not entirely ready for solid food. May God grant me perseverance.
