Wednesday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Today's Mass Readings

In our gospel today, Simon’s mother-in-law is healed from her severe fever after it was scared away by Jesus’ rebuke. Our gospel doesn’t tell us that she was happy after this happened. Our gospel doesn’t tell us that she had tears of joy. Our gospel doesn’t tell us that she was so overjoyed from her healing she started dancing. What does our gospel tell us after she was miraculously healed? She served Jesus and Simon their food. Did we miss something? No, we didn’t, friends. Jesus comes to set us all free from all that keeps us tied down. And our immediate response is to get to work! The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few! Jesus has saved us, he has made us new! Time to work! When I was a junior monk doing my monastery chores with another junior monk, I remember a senior monk stopping and telling us, “Less talk, more work.”
